Below are listed the main changes in the software from version 8 to
version 11. These are not documented in the printed manual. Please, read
this file carefully : each paragraph is related to the section of the
same number.
The main changes from Version 10 to 11 are as follows :
- Version 11 is dedicated to the ATAPI/IDE version of the Overdrive-CD.
Version 11 Revision 2 now supports three brands of ATAPI CDROMs, MITSUMI
(all models) , SONY, and BTC/OTI. The intent is to support all major makes
as soon as they are made available on the market. The ATAPI/EIDE standard
(ATA Packet Interface/Enhanced IDE) defines CDROM devices which attach to
the new 16-bit Enhanced IDE bus. This standard offers the same facilities
and allows the same transfer speeds as the SCSI-2 standard. In actual
fact, Enhanced IDE hard drives or CDROM drives turn out to be faster than
SCSI drives as they take full advantage of their fast 16-bit bus whereas
most SCSI drives are still linked to the computer through an 8-bit cable.
- On top of emulating the 'cd.device', Commodore's CD32 CDROM device,
the OVERDRIVE-CD handler emulates a standard ANSI SCSI-2 CDROM drive. This
may be useful to run some softwares (CD32 emulators, CDDA music players,
MAC-OS emulators...) which need access the SCSI-CDROM drive through the
SCSI-Direct facility offered in Commodore's scsi.device. Both the ATBUS
and the ATAPI/EIDE versions of the OVERDRIVE-CD offer this possiblility.
The device and unit to open are :
'amiquest.device', unit = 2.
- In the same way, the possibility of installing an alien filesystem
(other than 'overcdfilesystem') is now documented. To do so, replace the
file 'CD0' from the directory 'SYS:devs/DosDrivers' by the file 'CDDev'
located in the storage directory 'SYS:storage/DosDrivers'. The option
'NOFS=1', meaning 'No File System' has been added in 'CDDev' in order to
avoid mounting the 'overcdfilesystem'. The alien file system, such as
Commodore's 'CDFileSsytem', must be set up to open the unit 2 of the
'amiquest.device' which is the name of the SCSI driver of the OVERDRIVE
line of product (AMIQUEST, OVERDRIVE-HD, OVERDRIVE-CD and OVERDRIVE-COMBO).
The main changes from Version 8 to 10 are :
- OverCD filesystem now runs on A600 and CDTV is emulated.
- OverCD filesystem automatically recognizes multi-session CD's and
automatically mounts the last session on the CD which includes all the
sessions present on the CD.
- OverCD filesystem with Improved Disk Caching.
- New Boot menu with options to set keyboard and joypad emulation keys.
Game Score Recording on hard drive and Language options now supported.
- New CDDA Player options (CD Digital Audio player) and bugs fixed.
- Photo-CD Carrousel automatically recognizes multi-session CD's and
displays thumbnail pictures for all the photos recorded on the CD through
all sessions.
- Photo-CD Carrousel now includes a search scheme to locate Photo-CD
pictures (PCD format) on those CD's which do not comply with Kodak's
standard (pictures located into directory 'CD0:photo-cd/images' and
thumbnails stored in file 'CD0:photo-cd/overview.pcd').
- New utility, CDDoor, to monitor CDROM tray opening/closing from
Workbench (also included in CDDA).
1 - INSTALLATION
...
1.2 - Software Installation
The procedure to install the OVERDRIVE-CD software on your Amiga
depends on whether your system has a hard disk or only a floppy disk drive.
Be sure to follow the instructions appropriate for your system:
If your system has no hard disk, no installation of the software is
necessary. The installation diskette 'OVERCD' is basically a standard
'Workbench 3.0' which contains everything for the OVERDRIVE CD to operate
directly from it. Simply, insert the diskette in drive DF0: and boot up
your system in the usual way.
If your system has a hard disk, insert the installation diskette,
INSTALL, into the floppy drive. Simply click on the icon
'OverCD_1200.Install' or 'OverCD_600.Install' depending on the type of
your machine (Amiga 1200 or Amiga 600). This will set up everything needed
to make the CD32 emulation work into S:, C:, LIBS:, L: and DEVS:, using
Commodore's Installer program.
2 - OPERATION
...
2.1 - Running CD32 Games under Workbench 3.0
'Workbench 3.0' is the current version of the operating system on all
Amiga 1200 machines. The software of the OVERDRIVE-CD emulates most of the
new features of 'Workbench 3.1' which is the new release of the operating
system dedicated to the CD32.
In order to launch most CD32 games, the system need be restarted anew
and dedicated software emulation features be turned on. The switches to
activate these features are included in the mountlist 'sys:storage/CD0'.
Press simultaneously the 'CTRL', 'LEFT-A' and 'RIGHT-A' keys to
reboot the A1200 as usual.
Hence, there are two ways to run CD32 games :
1 - While the system is booting up, keep the RIGHT-MOUSE BUTTON pressed
for a short while. This will force the system to be transfered to the CD
and the boot process to continue from the CD. This is the prefered
standard way to run CD32 games.
2 - Otherwise, you may keep the LEFT-MOUSE BUTTON pressed while startup
until the 'CD32 Boot Requester' is displayed. Then, select the 'CDROM Boot'
option to boot from the CDROM drive. The OVERDRIVE-CD software
automatically recognizes the game controller plugged into JOYPORT 2 of your
A1200. Practically, you need at least a standard joystick to play CD32
games; the other buttons on the CD32 controller are emulated from the
keyboard.
From the 'CD32 Boot Menu', you may also select the keyboard keys to
emulate the CD32 JoyPad buttons : click first on the button you wish to
change and then either press a key on the machine keyboard or click on a
key of the keyboard drawn at the bottom of the screen.
The other three toggle buttons should be manipulated cautiously :
- "NoFastmem/FastMem" should normally be set to "NoFastMem" as there is
no so-called Fast Memory on a standard CD32 machine.
- "JoyStick/JoyPad" should be set to "JoyStick" unless you have a CD32
11-button JoyPad plugged in JoyPort 2.
- "Graphics 3.1/Graphics 3.0" should be set to "Graphics 3.1" except for
some rare CDTV games which do not comply with Commodore's new graphics
library features.
...
5 - CDDOOR
CDDoor is a small utility to automatically open and close the CDROM tray
from the Workbench. The program opens a tiny window located next to the
Workbench depth gadget on the right of the screen drag bar.
Simply click in the centre of the window to action the tray mechanism of
the CDROM drive.
